Bruce R. Katz (born 1947) is an American entrepreneur who co-founded The Rockport Shoe Company in 1972 and served as its CEO until its sale to Reebok International in 1986.[1] He is currently the founder and CEO of The Samuel Hubbard Shoe Company based in Mill Valley, California.[2]... Katz joined with his friends Mel and Patricia Ziegler and Bill Rosensweig to help create The Republic of Tea in 1992... Katz acquired The WELL in 1994,[14] and, when the Internet began to emerge from the early ARPA net, he moved to connect it to the early network, enabling users to log in from anywhere and access anything on the Net, not just The WELL’s discussion lists and servers. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_R._Katz

Jeff Atwood shares Joel Spolsky's intense dislike of Threaded Discussion. Joel: Branching is very logical to a programmer's mind but it doesn't correspond to the way conversations take place in the real world. Branched discussions are disjointed to follow and distracting. [..] Branching makes discussions get off track. Jeff: Personally, I have yet find any threaded discussion format I like. Aside from the philosophical objections Joel raises, threaded discussions are painful to use. You're forced to click through to see the responses, and once you do, there's far too much pogo-ing up and down the hierarchy of the threaded discussions. It's all so.. unnecessary.

Allen Ginsberg's Howl: I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked, dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of the night. Andy Matuschak and David Perell podcast: Designing Education. He’s focused on Tools for Thought — which is a fancy way of saying that he works on technologies that expand what people can think and do. Before working as a researcher, he helped build iOS at Apple, focusing on foundations like multitouch, animation, and inter-app coordination. (more)

Pirates and Emperors, Old and New: International Terrorism in the Real World is a book[1] by Noam Chomsky, titled after an observation by St. Augustine in City of God, "For when that king had asked the man what he meant by keeping hostile possession of the sea, he answered with bold pride, 'What do you mean by seizing the whole earth; because I do it with a petty ship, I am called a robber, while you who does it with a great fleet are styled emperor'.".... proposing that what governments coin as "terrorism" in the small simply reflects what governments utilize as "warfare" in the large. Yet, governments coerce their populations to denounce the former while embracing the latter. In the City of God, St. Augustine[2] tells the story. ISBN:978-0896086852 (more)

Tom Critchlow: Of Digital Streams, Campfires and Gardens. A thread from Venkatesh Rao on information consumption, with lovely insights about how retreating from technology is not the answer. (more)

Kevin Cunningham on Webmentions and Campfires. Seeing that as I’m engaging with the thinking of others, I’m metaphorically looking towards them. The problem is, how do they know I’m talking about and to them? Or, how do I know if someone is talking to me? (more)

KicksCondor on Blogchats. Blogchat is a misnomer because I interview people over e-mail. But the actual conversation comes alive when it is posted to the blog. (more)

John Otander is building a WIP Digital Garden app. Digital Garden is a content-first project meant to make it easier to write and curate content on the web. This is a project I've built for myself but hope it can be useful for other folks looking to create their own gardens that leverage the open web. You can use components in your content seamlessly using MDX which is rad for writing.

Chris Aldrich: Idea for a spaced repetition (SRS) user interface for Hypothes.is. I was looking at tools to pull annotations out of Kindle the other day and ran across Readwise again. Part of its functionality pulls highlights and annotations out of Kindle and then it has some UI that uses the idea of spaced repetition to have you regularly review what you’ve previously read and highlighted and presumably wanted to remember or use in the future (more)

KicksCondor: Gardens and Streams. Notes on 2020-04-25-AldrichGardensAndStreams. One of the things that I have found, in practice, is that human curation and human moderation seems to be at the heart of what we have to do. You can give me as many automated tools as you want, but I’m still the one that has to choose what’s going to go in my wiki and how I’m going to authorize other users to modify it. (more)
